Masson Hill Fell Race 2013

The second Masson Hill Fell race took place in Matlock Bath on May 21st. A fine day turned into a misty drizzly evening for 69 brave runners to attempt the challenge of 7.5km with 360m of ascent. The course was modified this year to be steeper at the start, climbing from Clifton Road straight up the Wappin path and deviating through woodland to burst out onto Bonsall Fields and up to Masson summit, returning via the Heights of Abraham.

The race this year raised funds for Matlock Bath Holy Trinity Primary School and was started by the Headteacher, Amanda Mee. The school supported the race by allowing the use of the school hall for registration and prize-giving and by supplying refreshments with delicious cakes for the competitors and visitors.

The first man to the summit was Sam Tash of Rossendale Harriers in 18 minutes 2 seconds with the first lady, Steph Curtis of the Pennine Club close behind at 19 minutes 2 seconds. The winner of the race was Dean Taylor of Ripley RC. The full results are on the website –

Spot prizes were kindly donated by Sue and Abid Shah of Huckleberry Willow, supporting the race for the second year.

Thanks to all who marshalled and helped on the course, especially to local people and those who moved their cars on New Bath Road and Clifton Road. The race raised £265 for school funds.

A final comment from Alan Billington of Belper Harriers who was 7th in the race “ really enjoyed the race-such a hard beautiful White Peak route”
