Adoption of Matlock Bath Station

In 2012, Matlock Bath Parish Council, adopted the railway station. The aim was to make the station more attractive and appealing to visitors and residents using the railway system.

In addition, adoptees are the 'eyes and ears' making sure that any problems are reported, litter bags are emptied and replaced and anything generally of concern are raised. It was upsetting to see recently that the childrens' pictures in the Waiting Shelter had been vandalised. The children had spent a tremendous amount of time producing the work as well as time and money by Derbyshire County Council to mount and display them. We would urge anyone who sees any vandalism taking place on the station to report it immediately to the Police. We would also be grateful if you could report it to the Parish Council so any graffiti can be removed as soon as possible.

The 10 barrels currently on the station have been planted and cared for by our team of volunteers to ensure that we have a wonderful array of plants throughout the year. The planters have been provided by the Parish Council and the hayracks by DCC.

Pictures created by the children of Holy Trinity School have been laminated and put up in the waiting shelter and around the station.

The benches have been re-painted and the station is a more welcoming sight for those using it.

Matlock Bath Railway Station has over the past two years been entered into the East Midlands Trains Best Station Award where 2nd and 3rd prizes have been awarded for the Most Improved Station category.

East Midlands Trains Best Station Awards celebrate the best of the company’s 89 stations and were made by a panel of judges comprising East Midlands Trains’ directors and senior managers and representation from Passenger Focus.

Our thanks must go to Alastair Morley, Community Rail Officer at Derbyshire County Council and Matty Materaghan for their help and support with this project. Councillors Lorraine Keeble, Michael Wilderspin and Peter Baranek, representing the Parish Council, together with volunteers Peter Keeble and Anne Wilderspin, should also be thanked for their efforts in the planting up of the plants and the watering during the spell of very hot weather. If anyone would be interested in becoming an adoptee of the station please contact the Clerk.

The station adopters will soon be discussing their next phase for the station.
